Some personal news: after 25 years on the road in Asia, Africa, the Mid East & USA, I’m off to the UK next year to be the BBC’s new Foreign Editor. It’s one of the best jobs in international news, working with a top team of BBC journalists at home & abroad. So, I’m chuffed!🙂

Former President Trump while visiting first responders in NYC on 9/11 rehashes his complaints about the election, crime in Chicago & how he did a deal with ‘Abdul’ from the Taliban.

It’s a reflection of the political aberration that was the Trump Presidency that Biden, Obama, Clinton and Bush have all been present at one of the 9/11 memorial sites this morning & Trump has not. He’s says he’ll attend later.

"Here Come the Taliban" by Rahimullah Yousafzai, 1995! Yousafzai sahib wrote in detail about the rise of Taliban 26 yrs ago, and if you read carefully what he wrote, you would know why was he different and better than the others. May Allah (SWT) grant him eternal peace!

Extremely sad news. Rahimullah was an incredibly generous man with both his wisdom & his time. A great loss to journalism.

As we prepare for the Taliban to seek new global alliances, it’s useful to remember that old proverb about Afghanistan’s warlords & rulers: ‘My enemy’s enemy’s friend’s enemy who was my friend is my enemy until he isn’t.’

The problem with multinational military ventures overseas is that every nation ends up taking a turn. Not enough institutional knowledge gets retained through rotations. Some nations send the commanders they’re happy to be rid off.

Seems the old Russian folk tale about ‘Masha and the Bear’ has been updated. It now ends with Masha being kicked out of the forest because the bears don’t like what she writes in her journal.

President Biden promises an over the horizon “tough unforgiving targeted strategy” against terrorism. Which literally means war by remote control using drones and they, as we have seen this week in Kabul, can often lead to civilian deaths.

Biden claims ‘some people wanted us to stay indefinitely’ in Afghanistan. I honestly don’t recall any credible voice in foreign policy in the US ever suggesting that.

“By the time I came to office the Taliban was as strong as it was in 2001…The choice was between leaving or escalating [the war]” says on the day he ended the US war in Afghanistan, once again claiming he faced a binary choice in Afghanistan which is highly debatable.

Today is deadline for to leave Russia - expelled for purely political reasons. Sarah was one of best informed & most considered foreign corrs in Moscow. Her expulsion is bad news for everyone who values fair reporting. continues to condemn decision.

The US media are consumed with Biden’s bungled end of the war in Afghanistan but I think for most Americans the important bit is ‘the end’. Unlike Vietnam, this wasn’t a war launched on a wave of American hubris so I think, with distance, the withdrawal will be less humbling.

America’s war in Afghanistan is over. US Gen. McKenzie announces “the completion of our withdrawal from Afghanistan." Also over (for the time being at least) is Afghanistan’s experiment with democracy & universal human rights.

I had not read this at the time it was published. It still merits being read now.
