Has anyone ever successfully tried to carve out a “GC-free” subset of some GC’d language? All of the attempts I can think of have been failures.

mm, where do you draw the line though? if you put, say, modern Objective-C (w/ automatic refcounting), Swift, and Rust on a line, there are definitely differences in how they manage memory, but I’d say it’s more about the pervasiveness of boxing than GC per se
