There's portability of implementation, and "portability" within the object language, i.e. abstraction. Abstraction (esp. higher-kinded polymorphism) and nonuniform repr are somewhat at odds. We haven't figured out how to abstract over the decision of whether or not to abstract!

Somewhat. Given enough implementation effort it can be done but it gets very fussy fast, yes.

I would argue portability and absolute performance are not in conflict :) And in fact, portability of virtual machines is often harder than portability of languages like Rust or C++, I think.

(the only major thing is something like electron, for graphics, but you can always compile to JS)
