Having trouble reconciling how open source isn't just unpaid free labor in many cases. If a company releases library A and several others adopt it, it becomes a communal asset and contributions are a win for everybody. That's all good.

That's an excellent point. I hadn't thought of it that way - instead of coming up with methods to pay contributors, promote the code itself for the good of others and give them incentive to help since they can benefit too.

I still think we should come up with methods to pay contributors. Not all of us have the privilege to be able to dedicate our free time to develop on open source.
