If you use a translucent Alacritty on macOS and see "phantom text", we found the problem. It looks like macOS glClear has a bug where it applies blending as well. This is contrary to the spec which explicitly states which per-fragment operations apply, and blending isn't one!

On many GPUs color clears are implemented as quad passes. This is specially true if you're clearing a region of the screen or using RTT flags that prevent compression optimizations. I'm guessing blend info from app is leaking into driver internal pass or corrupted for some reason

My suggestion is to try to disable alpha blending followed by a glFlush before the glClear. That may workaround there bug
