What do you call “(vec2 a, vec2 b) => a.x * b.y - a.y * b.x”?

Some kind of weird dot product? Usually, though, that's done by multiplying the corresponding entries in both vectors and adding them together; i.e., a.x * b.x + a.y * b.y.

"weird dot product whete nothing about it is the same" doesn't have quite the same ring to it

I guess it depends on the context, but maybe signedArea? I see what you mean by a 2d cross product, but it's hard not to read it and think you'll get another vector back. And determinant just isn't quite as evocative as the idea of a signed area.
