Neither. det A :: SquareMatrix -> Scalar and a `cross` b :: Vector -> Vector -> Vector
-
Sure, if you’re being pedantic :) I’m just asking: if you need to do a.x*b.y - a.y*b.x, what do you call that operation?

What could a “2d cross product” mean other than a 2x2 determinant?
-
Nothing, it’s the same thing. I’m just wondering which terminology people prefer.

Probably determinant, but definitely *not* 2d cross product. The generalized cross product always returns a vector which is perpendicular to the input vectors, which means in 2-space it's a unary function.
-
Is that actually a thing? I've always heard the term wedge product being used for that.

Exterior product, IMO. Generally the exterior product of 2 vectors is a bivector, but in 2D there's only one basis bivector so it's isomorphic to a scalar
