We can create lifelike virtual reality at 120fps, but our terminals still struggle to render eight colors' worth of *monospace* font at 30fps - and they don't even need to perform text layout.

We probably need a better terminal protocol. Something that can take advantage of changes that have occurred in the last forty years.

The protocol is really old, but almost impossible to change given all the apps that rely on it. I think the bottleneck at the moment is the OS 2D libraries rendering glyphs in the CPU.

Glyph cache hit rate is 99%+. It’s hard to pinpoint one bottleneck: it depends on the specific terminal emulator in use…
