The fact that he was so convinced "nobody had tried to reimplement POSIX utils in a safe language" just tells me a LOT about him. (hint: uutils is already a thing and it's easy to find via Google)

There's also https://github.com/AdaCore/gsh (POSIX shell for Windows, reimplementing many POSIX utilities as builtins, written in Ada).

I use Rust and OpenBSD heavily, so I want both to succeed. I've used OpenBSD since '99 and it's integrated many new security ideas since then. I read Theo's email msg as "not now, but not never" w.r.t Rust, though it was intemperately phrased.

I think his answer was OK, but the other emails in the thread not so good. I think people get upset about the underestimantion of the effort to rewrite these utilities. In that upset state, they write negative things.
