People worry about the devious things ISPs might do to make money from subscribers. But there are a zillion of those, many done today, most scarier than fast-lanes, none restricted by NN. See, for instance, tracking and advertising.

A lot of the craziest things people think will happen, after losing our 1 year of Title II “net neutrality”, are in FTC’s purview normally anyways.

I’m not a libertarian. I believe in public schools and public pensions. But not all regulation makes sense. Does regulating ISPs as if we’re done evolving the Internet make sense? I don’t think it does.

50 years ago you couldn’t open up a new trucking route to ship bananas or ball bearings without getting USG signoff. We didn’t deregulate trucking until 1980. Was that a good regulation? No. 50 years from now, will Title II make sense? I doubt it.

Anyways, my ultimate goal isn’t to convince you about NN. It’s just to note that there’s another side to this discussion, and it’s not about getting rid of all regulations, and it’s not just Internet contrarianism.

Please, though: if you’re in the typical “cares about NN on Twitter” demographic (ie: liberal), pay at least 2x more attention to the rest of what’s going on in DC. Voting rights are a much, much more important issue than NN.

Isn’t it reasonable to agree with your last sentence but still focus efforts on NN right now because of its urgency?

Well, I mean, I don’t think it’s good policy at all, let alone urgent; I think I’m a hard sell on “NN is more important than DACA”.

I have trouble ranking the importance of issues even though I know that opportunity cost is real and important to recognize. I generally end up resignedly joking that getting tasks ranked in the exact right order is definitely one of the lower priority tasks.

It’s all fun and games until people start talking about voting for the Republican who made the right noises about NN — which has happened on HN before.

To be fair, the GOP back in those days wasn’t the GOP of today (which is completely indefensible and has lost a legitimate reason to exist).

I wasn’t even considering partisanship. I don’t even know how or if the parties differ on net neutrality.
