For my part: I. Don’t. Care. When Firefox is all Rust, I’ll tell people to use Firefox. Until then...

Do you see Rust as a enabler of better security?

Not using C/C++ is a huge win.

We don't actually have many language options for the set of performance constraints GUI foundations require. They're all mostly C, C++, or ASM w/ scripting glue on top. Most memory safety is won via GC, which keeps busting latency budgets.

Rust is exciting because it's memory safety without depending on GC. It's also somewhat disappointingly complex to code in. I'm sort of expecting another language that compiles to Rust. Interesting to see what happens with LLVM/Swift/Julia too.

I found that once I accepted that Rust is a functional language, it becomes less irritating to code in. Better than C++, for sure.

I was talking to a Servo developer, and asked him what he thought about Rust as a language. His face said it all.

Everyone knows Servo devs secretly long to go back to C++

I’m very confused by this conversation. I have never heard of people secretly wishing Servo were written in C++.

My sense is that there's a bunch of intransigence in Rust's design, in terms of just not solving certain classes of problems. Sounded like how people talk about Go and generics. He wasn't begging for C++, but he was _not_ happy about certain limitations.

It sure would be nice if whoever it was voiced those concerns to the Rust team and community!

I hear way more complaints that Rust is not “intransigent” *enough* (i.e. that the number of RFCs are overwhelming) than the opposite!
