Well, nobody would use Unix pipes: they’d use Unix sockets or Mach ports, etc. But anyway, for a protocol meant to be stable and extensible…
Reasonable people can disagree as to whether wire protocols or COM-based DLLs are preferable…but I think most would prefer the former :)

Sure, let's ignore the C ABI exists and all the languages in question support it with rather simple FFI systems.

The C ABI doesn’t by itself support stable, extensible APIs (that’s why COM was invented). Wire protocols like JSON-RPC do.
