once again I’m running into stupid issues with Python 3’s Unicode handling that’s supposedly better than Python 2 but is actually worse.

I think you’re basically just working with a binary protocol that happens to line up with ASCII, sometimes.

Sure, but I think that describes most traditional text-based protocols/formats. HTTP has an explicit encoding (ISO-8859-1) but most don’t.
