once again I’m running into stupid issues with Python 3’s Unicode handling that’s supposedly better than Python 2 but is actually worse.

…rcs is not locale-aware and will escape occurrences of the *byte* @. so in fact, if i decode as shift-jis first, it’s impossible to parse!
