The more I work in this space, the more I’m convinced that all major OS’s and browsers’ 2D rendering stacks should be thrown out and redone.

Exactly. On iOS Core Animation composites cached layers, as rendering them was slow. Modern GPU stacks are making this step obsolete.

Not slow, but inefficient. And it's still inefficient, which is why we've gone from composition hardware capable of 3 layers to 8+

With VR/AR compositing will go away since arbitrariliy fixing resolution in your composite stack is absolutely not what you want.

Um, this is very wrong. Every HMD driver comes with its own compositor You need a compositor to do asynchronous time/space warp type things
