The more I work in this space, the more I’m convinced that all major OS’s and browsers’ 2D rendering stacks should be thrown out and redone.

You're always going to need a compositor unless you're letting apps just draw to the screen surface like GDI/X11 used to

Unless you're in full screen mode, something needs to take window textures and assemble a screen out of them

wouldn't compositors be inherent if it hw accelerated? Or only if you are ~Wayland ("desktop" pulling different apps together)

I dunno, I guess I’m on the fence about Wayland. What I don’t like is compositors when not used for security.

I dunno, I feel like this is kinda overkill?
@haikuOS is still on server-side-drawing no-composite model & beats the pants off Xorg/wayland -
Sure, for web & other heavyweight/complex content GPU makes sense. But for pure UIs it feels like overkill.
