Is Firefox 54 noticeably faster, or is it that i've heard that it's faster so my brain is primed to think so?

It’s the multiprocess. Big difference as it basically means main thread events multiplexed among 5 threads.

I’ve worked on browser parallelism full time for probably longer than anyone else. Processes are not effective for multicore parallelism.

Raising your process count above 4 won’t make a difference for multicore. It might improve concurrency a bit, at the cost of memory use.
