Those points seem fine but only incidentally about Rust. My 2c: no impl PL adds enough to justify reengineering any mature JS VM. 1/

If you want to write a new production VM, justify real hard an existing one doesn't fit/too much maintenance/you have massive resources. 2/

FWIW, I on the whole agree; highly unlikely to add enough. "Production" only insofar as "has the required features". /1

Unlikely to ever actually be competitive because of resources, especially on an ongoing basis. /2

The angle to work is memsafe yet C++-performant engine. The fly in ointment is JIT mem-unsafety.

Maybe I'm just too pessimistic about the resultant memory unsafety. :)

Aren’t a lot of the memory safety problems in practice in non-core-VM parts? Built-in function implementations, etc.

Related point: SM has had to move some builtin impls from self-hjosted back to C++ for perf. Heard similar from V8.

In light of Patrick's point (incrementalism, almost always good), why not a Quantum for SpiderMonkey, C++ to Rust in small pay-as-go steps?

Hard for me to weigh in without Rust experience. My feeling is many higher value low-hanging fruits exist than rewriting components in Rust.

Any perf work that won't benefit from a compartmentalized rewrite, which is most perf work, I'd say.

The thing I'd most like is an API to SM which still allowed use of linear types, lifetimes etc. ATM servo has to RefCell almost everything.

@eroc and I have plans to replace expat (XML parsing lib) with Rust code. It's old, gnarly code with a history of security flaws.
