Every time somebody says “I don’t need the compiler to do optimizations, I write fast code already” I ask if they’ve ever written “x / 3”.

I write x/3 only because I know that the compiler handles it correctly. If it didn't, I wouldn't write it =)

Wasn’t implying that. I think both extreme ends (“optzns are useless” and “sufficiently smart compiler”) are wrong.
