Every time somebody says “I don’t need the compiler to do optimizations, I write fast code already” I ask if they’ve ever written “x / 3”.

and compilers still use IDIV for x/y even though there are often faster ways to do it in software (offsetting a call).

^ offsetting the cost of a function call, and often still used. could almost just be a hidden API call at this point...
