Has there ever been any rationale discussion about the amd64 calling convention? I'm curious why the particular registers were chosen for arguments and for callee preservation

I thought some assemblers did accept r0-r7 as alternative syntax for the traditional registers

But it's probably just confusing in the end for all the x86 programmers who've already remembered all the special cases and implicit operands using the traditional registers
