Realized this weekend: Fundamentally, SDFs used for font rendering work by approximating Bezier curves with sections of hyperbolas. This is because bilinear interpolation traces out the graph of a bilinear function, y = (ax + b)/(cx + d).
Problem is, mSDF can only express A OP B, where A and B are hyperbolic curves and OP is a single Boolean operation. Sometimes you need unbounded numbers of features per texel.
