Since distance fields are popular right now, here’s another periodic plug for an underappreciated paper: G. Taubin, “Distance Approximations for Rasterizing Implicit Curves” 1994. Specifically, section 4, “A First-Order Approximate Distance” http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.62.4283&rep=rep1&type=pdf …

Ever looked up e.g. the distance to an ellipse and thought “this is way too complicated, there must be an easier way”? There is! This paper shows you how. It works for most curves. I implemented it for antialiasing of border radii in Firefox/WebRender and it’s worked great.

Impressive results rendering complex curves using this trick. Fully parallel and works great in fragment shaders.pic.twitter.com/YKDLaDykFN
