There's a proven formula that's guaranteed to enrage a certain portion of tech people: Just walk into the room and suggest that Linux will be just another app you install while running Windows.

Yep, it enrages me, and makes me think less of you. Have fun trying to run ms windows on a: - phone - supercomputer - fridge - workstation with more than 64 cores - rPi Maybe it is windows that is “just another platform” here?

I'm just telling it like it is. Don't shoot the messenger. I've been using WSL for a few months and I can see where Microsoft is going with this. It works.

On desktop PCs, probably. x86 PCs were never open hardware anyway. If you’re running a PC you’re already running a mix of proprietary and open software. If you want an open system use a SiFive board or something.

(To be clear I think having open systems available is valuable. It’s just that that’s not what PCs are.)
