For what it’s worth I tend to side with Daniel. It’s not true that compilers focus their optimizations along a single path. For register allocation it’s almost the case that the opposite is true, though it highly depends on the algorithm.

If you have any references i am very interested, but from what i've seen whatever interpreter loop optimization happens seems to be very compiler dependent and fragile as small changes to the code can derail the optimization and drastically change the performance of it.
