Is there a nice algorithm to automatically UV map an arbitrary 3D model, if all I want to do is use it to apply a uniform surface finish?

Blender has some nice auto-unwrap algorithms in it. Check its source code

"auto-unwrap" is a good keyword tip, thanks. I don't need top of the line results, so a simpler algo with OK results would be fine if there is such a thing
