I mean heck, I did an experiment a few years ago where I turned off the JIT and I didn’t really notice anything. (Fun experiment, I recommend it) :)

I did for about a year after Spectre because information was so bad about what mitigations were/weren't present. It was pretty bad on my Celeron laptop, but I can imagine it'd be just fine on a high-end box. And it'd be perfectly usable if serious effort were put into the interp.
