i've been watching the cats lately and i'm wondering if a lot of the complaints about cats not knowing if they want in or out of the door are missing the goal entirely i think (these, at least) cats have a desire to, specifically, infiltrate gaps

I'm not sure if that's right: cats do seek secluded enclosed spaces (like if you put up a blanket on some supports they'll crawl under). also, a cat that lived here before knew how to open the apt door from either side and had no issues with the concept
