This is the correct take. It will never cease to baffle me that housing is the one place where some American leftists pretend the middle class doesn’t matter.https://twitter.com/DavidL206/status/1202309031345344512 …

I’m fervently in favor of mixed income public housing & we should unquestionably build enough to house any American who wants to live in it. But it’s a pretty safe assumption that not all people want to live in public housing & they should have economical options too.

This is, of course, responding to the more charitable leftist argument against new middle-class-affordable private apartments (“everybody should live in public housing”) instead of the more likely case (“I don’t like apartments & will choose whatever excuse is most convenient.”)

So much torturous, contortionist justification goes into some American leftists opposing things like new apartments & dedicated bus lanes when the simple, obvious answer is that 20th-century capitalist propaganda idealizing white suburbia infected them as much as anybody.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking lately how folks’ opinion on whether building more makes housing more or less expensive is almost perfectly correlated with their preference for suburbia or the urban lifestyle.
