so I'm still sort of coming to terms with how to develop software on a machine lacking /usr/include (a machine running OS X Catalina that is) and this seems to be a useful part of the answer: export CPATH=`xcrun --show-sdk-path`/usr/include

but then does anything know to look there? or this only makes sense in conjunction with other ways to tell tools where to find these files?
