academic question: if you write a paper with results based on the (commercial) SPEC benchmarks, what are the corresponding instructions for the artifact evaluators? is it just "point this variable to your local SPEC CPU installation"?

Last I checked SPEC was full of UB, so GCC and clang should just special-case compile it to exit(0);
