gofmt had options at first because we didn't think about it. The point was to have a global style and not bicker about style but even having options there tempted some people or confused the message. On the whole, nobody used the options, though, so we removed them.

The configurability of rustfmt definitely is my least favorite feature because there *are* projects that change them. Would not remind removing that feature and do what gofmt did.

Last time I checked there were some vocal/influential community members strony against this, which is really unfortunate.

I have a file that I put in all my projects. The defaults are mostly good but at least for the things I want I can configure them like 2 spaces for indentation

On my projects I decrease the line length to 80 (I like to be able to have 2, 3, or 4 files open side by side depending on the size of display I'm using)

This is exactly what i’d like to do in Go.

It's subtle. We made it configurable, but not in your face and made a lot of effort to nail down acceptable defaults. I was worried about us punting on hard problems by saying "people can configure it" which we didn't do. Kind of like y2k

Last I saw, the config file only worked on nightly so I never even bothered to form any opinions on style.

I used it for the first time last week (for my personal project) and configured it to use tabs over spaces. Worked seamlessly.
