Patrick Walton added,
Instead of ridiculing, perhaps we should take the point about setting achievable targets to heart. I know I will as it is clear to me that the language team didn't in 2019. Today I think @graydon_pub's had more good points about limits and sustainability than I used to.
That’s a non-sequitur. You can’t use an argument in favor of *slowing down* the rate of change to argue that the language isn’t changing fast enough.
I didn't read their comment on reddit as complaining that the language didn't change fast enough. The way I read it, it was clearly about setting reasonable, and more limited targets. At any rate, that's the sentiment I support.
Welcome to software management. No software ever hits all of its planning milestones on time. But it’s still useful to have them! I think you’re setting an unrealistically high standard for software project management. Software planning is *hard*.
Thanks? I don't want to engage in too much self-deprecation. What's more interesting is what we do about it moving forward. I'd say we need to be more conservative with accepting new proposals & allow the compiler team to catch up, especially wrt. those ICEs & soundness holes.
I agree that we should try to adapt and make our roadmaps as realistic as possible for the next go-round. Throwing around terms like “accountability” as if someone needs to be fired, or accusing the roadmap of being “marketing”, like that Reddit post did isn’t helpful, though.
Yep, I agree. We can try to improve and be friendly at the same time.
