No cheating and looking at sample code either. You get to figure out the difference between glXCreateContext(), glXCreateNewContext(), and glXCreateContextAttribsARB() yourself :)

I'm doing it! https://github.com/andrewrk/zig-window/blob/ee7006708697a764f0dc93690d3e325fbd5657a6/example/nox.zig … I don't have a window open yet.

But then there's Wayland, where if I want the cutting-edge window management features of twm, I have to write my own compositor.

You need Xlib for GLX to work in many cases. XCB won’t work. One of the many reasons X11 needs to die!

FWIW I have done this and would contend that using GLX on Xlib is annoying but nowhere near peak X11. If you really want someone to light the torches and bring out the pitchforks, don't render via GL, make them deal with X11 font handling.
