Why choose between dithering or DCT artifacts when you can have both

Well, if you're a game, and the stuff being dithered is fairly low contrast, then you also have temporal dithering on your side if you're refreshing at 60hz

Relying on temporal dithering falls apart when someone takes a screenshot and the output is hideous. Just like the same issue with interlaced video.

Temporal stability is why DCT artifacts in video look so awful. You don't want temporal stability of any kind of noise. Eye tracks it like an object.

The same can be said for spacial stability - that's why the dithering I hate looks so bad. Eye tracks it as a flat texture in the view plane and destroys any illusion that the object it appears on is 3D.
