agreed but it's a weird comparison to make, given you can just do both? just sad about where we've focused our resources?

Oh, I'm not sad at all! I'm actually very excited about the WebRender/Pathfinder roadmap for the reason you state: we should do both. Really I'm just pointing out a blind spot of most vector graphics research. If a technique has no OS compositor story it's a severe problem.

Noob question: Isn't zooming with DirectCompositon/CoreAnimation texture-based? I thought one benefit of something like Pathfinder is that things look sharp on every frame.

It's not clear to me that precise vector rendering on every frame is worth the power/performance cost compared to trilinear (or even bilinear) filtering. That said, when you do need to draw tiles you obviously want to go as fast as possible and that's where Pathfinder shines.
