Hot take: The idea that desktop apps need to be "native" is mostly a macOS thing. On Windows and Linux there hasn't been such a thing as a single "native" widget set for years.

Similar to the way on Linux the basic problem is the KDE/Qt vs. GNOME/GTK fight.

I don't think that's fundamentally a problem. Over time they've shared more and more infrastructure for things like rendering. Maybe there could be lower-level implementations of things like text editing engines with a lot of useful common behavior over time
