Clearly this is the best name, as then we can describe GUI development as "paneful"

Modern UI libraries like GTK tend to have widgets that are rendered entirely client side without a corresponding X11 or whatnot window. Won't this cause confusion?
-
For GTK in X11 there is an X Window it just takes up the entire window (which wasn't always true). With compositing desktops the windows contents are redirected to an offscreen buffer than rendered with GL. The window is needed for input handling.

View is vague as hell but IMO better than Widget. It also has obvious precedence.

I've always found "Widget" to be ambiguous and could refer to either a view or to a control. I think more than anything, having docs in a highly visible place to explain the terminology+concepts is important.

In gtk4 we switched from GdkWindow to GdkSurface for the native thing (high level is still GtkWindow)

I supposed that matches the Wayland terminology.
