It’s interesting that for a very long time most OS research operated under the assumption that an OS must be very Unix-like to have a chance. Meanwhile the two most successful OS’s lately—iOS and Android—barely even tried.

Some of the interesting OS research I came across challenged the Unix assumptions somewhat. Singularity, Midori and Zircon come to mind.
