This is not to say Cargo can't be improved! It definitely needs to be improved for complex use cases. But the fact that it prefers a certain workflow isn't inflexibility. It's just making easy things easy. Make/CMake/Automake mostly don't follow this principle.

"Easy things are easy" when I can make an executable from a program of one to several source files using just one command invoking the compiler. If I need to write some toml file (and learn its syntax first), that's not easy.

Hard things are possible, though? If so, then confusion may be a marketing problem. It's not as if hard things are easy in C++ build regimes that I know!
