If Rust is pointless because sometimes you need unsafe blocks, then memory protection is also pointless because sometimes you have to switch to ring 0.

I got your point, I believe. The question is whether the mechanism in Rust is worth the price: given that it requires an escape mechanism and is vulnerable to bad programming as much as any other code. It's an engineering tradeoff like any other.
