XOR linked lists are awesome, but only in appropriate places. Pretending their absence rather than much higher level idiomatic problems is the cause of Java's bloat is a joke.
I can’t think of a single piece of software that uses xor linked lists…
That’s a simple way to save space. A DNS cache stores a lot of small records.
Wouldn’t it save more space to pack multiple records into a single allocation or something? If you have a single heap allocation per small record, seems to me you’ve already lost…
There’s a single heap allocation for the whole cache. It’s a circular buffer.
Interesting. But in that case you could do that in Java as well, by just storing your next/prev pointers as xor’d indices :)
