Same. There are very likely more compact data structures if you need to shave off sizeof(ptr) bytes from each allocation. I guess the argument would be compact *and* super-fast, but again I bet on a case-by-case basis you could do better.
For a dlmalloc design it affects min chunk size/granularity (16 vs 32 bytes) which can be a big deal.
They're very useful in implementing certain malloc designs.
