I’m seriously confused as to why irregular Z-buffers never took off
Probably no HW friendly impl has been found. Atleast one of the guys of this paper works at nvidia nowadays, http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.101.809&rep=rep1&type=pdf …
The perf numbers in the paper always looked pretty impressive though, and the benefits of perfect shadow map quality seem enormous…
Dunno , considering how fast plain shadow mapping was pn contemporary machines i’m not really sure and the algo doesn’t seem parallellization friendly at all. Otoh the work that has gone into making rt raytracing work might be repurposed since it’s not entirely dissimilar
Are we looking at the same paper? I’m referring to https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/The-Irregular-Z-Buffer-and-its-Application-to-Johnson-Burns/ba569459fb4036bb374eeac335868b6f94e63578 … It’s totally parallelizable.
