For example, a *lot* of the reason software is so unfriendly to non-Latin language speakers is because people who speak those languages just homebrew their text handling instead of using libraries. This is manifestly unfair to most of the world.

When I was a kid I wrote a website that used regexes for HTML escaping, because I didn’t want dependencies. That’s what I want to push people away from doing. :)

I think that's a valid concern. But I think there's a nuance to it because there are lots of legit reasons to rewrite, revisit or subset. The position you're presenting is, after all, part of how we got so many people using OpenSSL for so long instead of revisiting & redesigning.

A few of those seem like they could be made easier by having readily available specs or property tests. When the time does come for a new implementation it can at least learn from the accumulated wisdom of what exists
