For example, a *lot* of the reason software is so unfriendly to non-Latin language speakers is because people who speak those languages just homebrew their text handling instead of using libraries. This is manifestly unfair to most of the world.

Yeah I'm ok with that too. A small-ish number of canonical implementations of hard, important deps is a red herring. Doubt anyone dislikes that. The troubling case is taking a totally trivial dep as though it's no cost -- "so why write our own?" -- when it has an integrity cost.
