Kernel dev has been done in Go. TinyGo can be used for embedded systems (although arguably, it's not really go anymore).

You can write kernels in Java as well, but that doesn’t make it a good idea.

Some argued it can be a good idea: "The benefits and costs of writing a POSIX kernel in a high-level language". https://www.usenix.org/system/files/osdi18-cutler.pdf …

Call me crazy, but I don’t think it’s going to be common to use an OS written in Go any time soon

Right. But I think it's more a problem due to interface.

But to be fair, let's take all kernel code written in the last year, what's the proportion of rust in thay?

I’ml less concerned with the proportion and more concerned with the trajectory, which is quite good in all respects. There are many Rust kernel projects and RTOS-like projects that are making great progress towards being (or already are) production-ready

is there a blog post or something summarizing the state of the art here? every now and than I see a random repo link but it would be nice to learn about the big picture

Replying to @johnregehr @bascule and
like, has any Rust OS gotten to the point of having fork() with COW and a usable TCP stack?

Replying to @johnregehr
It's not a reasonable ask, but I'd just like to know the volume of code in (some kind of production) not written by Mozilla.

I’m not a fan of cryptocurrency, but Facebook’s Libra is a giant pile of Rust. There’s also a good bit of the Dropbox client.

(This is by no means an exhaustive list, it’s literally just what came to mind off the top of my head.) https://www.rust-lang.org/production has a list
