It just worked right up until it didn't, and then you couldn't do anything about it. With GCC the solution will totally undocumented, but after you read the compiler source code and figure it out, you can actually solve your problem.

I've used embedded compilers that worked like this: common case contained no clobbers, no wack-ass barely-dcumented %-codes, just instructions and identifiers

MSVC’s assembler was pretty incredible/ridiculous though, supporting things like .if … .endif to automatically generate conditional branches and so forth
