even though it exists to interface with a large legacy utf16-based system, the swift devs still found significant performance benefits in privileging utf8 as the primary encoding of strings:https://swift.org/blog/utf8-string/ …

Key insight: strings contain Data (machine structure) or Text (human structure). Even with cjk Text (utf16 best), it is often wrapped in *more* ascii Data (utf8 best), so utf8 wins. Data is also heavily processed, while Text is mostly opaque. Perf of Data matters more, utf8 wins.

UTF-8 is the best “worse is better” technology to come out of Plan 9 by far.

I dunno I get a little shiver of delight every time a Go program reports an error “dialing” a network address.

I'm not even sure it's "worse" than any of the alternatives. It does give up on not privileging one writing system over another in terms of storage, but UCS-2 ultimately failed at that too.

But is it really “worse is better”? It has so many great properties and almost no downsides. It’s very practical instead of academically elegant but I am not sure this alone qualifies as worse is better.
