One thing I think is underappreciated about vector APIs like <canvas> is how easy they are to get started with. Even kids can learn them. Fast vector rendering opens the door to high-performance graphics to a much wider audience than before.

I normally emulate a more flash drawing api over canvas, the saving context stuff for me is ugly, to me it's more natural to work with a transform group like sprite, but svg is terrible someone needs to reinvent, I know adobe and microsoft both created alternatives.
